A boiler can sometimes be moved to a different position, but the new location needs assessing before you plan around it. The flue, water and gas connections, condensate drainage and access for maintenance all matter. An empty wall or spare cupboard is not enough on its own to confirm suitability.
Relocating the boiler you already have is a different job from fitting a replacement in a new position. If you are considering a JustFix replacement, discuss the new position with the team before booking.
Move the existing boiler or replace it?
If the boiler is otherwise suitable and serviceable, an engineer can assess whether relocating it is practical. Its condition, manufacturer instructions, flue components and any warranty implications need considering before deciding to reuse it.
If you are already replacing the boiler, discuss a possible new position before the installation scope is agreed. Combining the decisions may avoid planning the same pipework changes twice, but it does not make relocation automatically suitable. Compare the work involved rather than assuming moving an old boiler is always the better option.
What makes a new position suitable?
- Flue route: the engineer needs to establish an appropriate route and termination position under the manufacturer's instructions and applicable requirements.
- Connections: gas supply, heating and hot water pipework, electrical connections and condensate drainage need assessing for the new position.
- Support and clearances: the appliance needs suitable mounting and the space required for installation, operation and servicing.
- Maintenance access: an engineer must be able to reach the boiler and carry out future inspections and repairs.
- Cold conditions: unheated areas and exposed pipework may require appropriate frost-protection measures.
Do not use a generic online clearance measurement as approval for your own installation. The appliance instructions, building layout and applicable rules need to be considered together by the installer.
Can a boiler go in a loft, garage or cupboard?
| Possible location | Questions to check |
|---|---|
| Loft | Is there suitable safe access, support, lighting and a workable service area? How will cold conditions and pipe routes be managed? |
| Garage | Are the location, support, flue and drainage suitable, and are frost protection and maintenance access addressed? |
| Cupboard | Does the proposed enclosure meet the appliance's clearance and any ventilation requirements, without obstructing servicing? |
| Another internal room | Can a suitable flue and connections be provided, and do any room-specific requirements affect the position? |
These are assessment questions, not a list of approved locations. Viessmann's relocation guidance also highlights access and the additional work a loft location can involve. Do not commission building alterations on the assumption that a proposed boiler position has already been accepted.
What disruption should you plan for?
A move may involve new pipe routes through floors, walls or ceilings, work at the new flue position and making good the old location. Ask which openings, coverings and finishes are included in the agreed work, and whether separate building or decorating work will be needed.
Confirm when heating and hot water will be interrupted and which rooms need to be accessible. A longer pipe route can also affect how quickly hot water reaches an outlet. Our installation-time guide explains why the scope matters more than a generic completion promise.
What should a relocation assessment cover?
- Whether the existing appliance can be reused or a replacement is being proposed.
- The exact new position, flue route, connections and any changes to the heating or hot water system.
- Responsibility for access arrangements, preparation, making good and any separate work.
- How the appliance will be recommissioned and what records or notifications apply to the work.
- Any implications for the manufacturer's warranty and future servicing.
- The expected schedule, interruptions and who will discuss a change to the agreed plan.
Keep the agreed scope in writing. If you are comparing a move with a complete replacement, our installation cost guide explains what to compare without treating an appliance-only price as the whole job.
Discuss a new position before booking
Gas work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer qualified for the work. Leave disconnection, alterations and recommissioning to the engineer rather than trying to prepare the gas appliance yourself.
If you are considering a JustFix replacement in a different position, explain the proposed move to the team and confirm whether the job is supported before booking. The boiler installation page describes the core service. You can start a boiler quote with your home details, but the proposed new position needs confirming with the team.
For the wider decision, compare combi, system and regular boilers and read what installation paperwork to expect. You can find the related planning guides in the boiler guides hub.
