How long does boiler installation take?

A heating engineer's tool bag, spirit level and a calendar with one day circled on a dust sheet

A straightforward like-for-like boiler replacement can often be completed within a day. Moving the boiler, changing the system type or repairing existing pipework can take longer. The installer should confirm the expected duration for your specific job before work starts.

As general manufacturer guidance, Worcester Bosch describes boiler installation as typically taking one to three days, with straightforward swaps often completed in a day. That is context, not a guaranteed JustFix completion time or a promise of next-day availability.

Why the type of installation matters

InstallationWhat affects the time
Like-for-like replacementKeeping the type and position can reduce changes, but connections, controls and the existing system still need checking.
A new boiler positionA different flue route, gas pipework, heating connections or condensate drain can add work.
Changing system typeRemoving a cylinder or tanks and adapting the heating and hot water arrangements adds steps.
Existing system problemsLeaks, circulation problems or unsuitable pipework may need attention before completion.

These are planning differences, not fixed appointment lengths. For combi-specific decisions, see our combi boiler installation and replacement guide.

Will I be without heating and hot water?

Expect an interruption while the existing boiler is disconnected and the replacement is installed and commissioned. The period without heating or hot water is not necessarily the same as the full job duration, particularly on work spread over more than one day.

Ask the installer when the interruption starts, whether services will be restored between visits, and what arrangements are practical for your household. Mention anyone who relies on a warm home or regular hot water, so their needs can be discussed before the appointment.

How to prepare before the engineer arrives

  • Clear the work area: make space around the boiler and keep the route from the entrance clear, without removing the casing or altering connections.
  • Arrange access: check whether the engineer needs access to radiators, the cylinder cupboard, loft or other areas involved in the agreed work.
  • Share useful details: explain known leaks, troublesome radiators, hot water issues and any recent changes to the property.
  • Plan your day: confirm the arrival window and when you need to be available for questions and the handover.
  • Keep people and pets clear: agree how the work area will be kept accessible during the installation.

Ask what you need to move in advance. Do not drain the heating system or disconnect anything yourself unless the installer has specifically explained an appropriate non-technical preparation task.

What happens on installation day?

The engineer checks the agreed scope and makes the existing installation safe before removing and replacing the boiler. The work may involve pipework, controls, the flue, system cleaning or other agreed changes, depending on the job.

The replacement then needs commissioning and the relevant safety and operating checks. Allow time for these and the handover: a boiler being connected is not the same as the installation being finished. Ask how to use the controls and where to find the documentation. Our installation certificates and paperwork guide explains the different records to discuss.

What can extend a replacement?

Restricted access, changes to the agreed location, unexpected pipework condition or problems in the existing heating circuit can affect the schedule. A system conversion may also need more coordination than a same-position replacement.

If the replacement involves a new position, read our guide to moving a boiler. Confirm what has been allowed for in the quote and how any unexpected work will be discussed. If you are comparing installations, compare the scope as well as the proposed date. Our guide to boiler installation costs explains the main scope differences without giving a one-size-fits-all price.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What is the expected installation duration for this particular replacement?
  • When will heating and hot water be unavailable?
  • Which rooms and parts of the system need to be accessible?
  • What removal, cleaning, controls and commissioning work is included?
  • When will the handover happen, and what paperwork will I receive?
  • Who is my point of contact if the plan needs to change?
